The play:

A Kid-Summer Night’s Dream was devised with an audience of 5-11yr olds in mind but may be
enjoyed by anyone who would enjoy a less serious approach to a Shakespeare classic.
This version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has all the comedy and confusion of the original play
but is considerably shorter (about 50 minutes) with more audience interaction and none of the
boring speeches. However, within the informal theatrical style occasional snippets of original text
slip in to allow the audience to experience the glorious rhythm and musicality of Shakespearean
language.
The show is performed by Claire Watson, Katie Dale and Nick Surridge who share a passion for
theatre and encouraging children in drama. They were all in the cast together in last year’s CSF
production of A Mid-summer Night’s Dream and enjoyed it so much they wanted to do it again – but
faster, sillier and with more water pistols.

The director:

“I have been part of Canterbury Shakespeare Festival since moving to Canterbury some five years
ago and was immediately made to feel welcome. The joy and enthusiasm of all involved and the
spirit of inclusivity is a delight. It has been thrilling to perform on fine summer nights in historic
outdoor settings and occasionally hilarious to battle unsuccessfully against wind and rain. I have
thoroughly enjoyed every play I have been part of but was particularly grateful to be cast as Polonius
in the 2019 production of Hamlet.”
